Design Decisions!

Design Decisions!
Design Decisions!

There are myriad decisions to make when building your dream home – literally hundreds of questions that you will need to answer before you are ready to move in. Top of mind for most people is what type of tile they are going to put into their bathrooms or their kitchen cabinet and counter choices, but there are many more options to consider – from exterior paint color to bathroom mirrors, including:

Exterior options include obvious things like exterior siding and trim colors and exterior door styles, but other considerations are garage door style, roof shingle color, window style and more. Exterior trim also plays an important role in the curb appeal of your home. Do you want shutters? Window boxes? What type of trim do want around your windows and exterior doors? Would you like to add stone to the façade of the house?

Kitchens & Baths are what most people focus on when thinking about the design for their new home. With these two very important rooms in the house, getting the design just the way you want it is important. For both kitchens and baths you’ll need to consider: cabinetry, countertops, sinks, tile, flooring, lighting and fixtures (faucets, showerheads, etc.). In the kitchen you’ll also need to consider appliances and the type of storage that will work best for your needs (drawers vs. cabinets; specialized inserts; lazy susans, etc). In the bath, you’ll consider toilet, tub and shower options, mirrors and medicine cabinets.

Other interior options include flooring, interior door size and style, door hardware style and finish, crown moulding, baseboards, interior trim around doors and windows, other woodwork like wainscoting and built-ins, lighting, light switches, outlets and more.

Each of these design elements will impact the look and feel of your home, so it’s important to take your time and be thoughtful in your selections. Feeling overwhelmed? Don’t be!
